As a child, back in 1978-1979, I lived in Rotorua for a year. A year, to the day, as a matter of fact. Our first meal on the island was fish and chips with Watties, and our last meal was the same. It was our family favorite.
Finding fish and chips here in the US is easy. Finding fish and chips that taste as good as even my newspaper wrapped school lunch is not easy. And no one has Watties!
About twelve years ago my parents went on holiday to various parts of Australia and the gift they brought home to me was a 330g bottle of Watties. Other than a pair of black 'Milano' Uggs it was the best thing they could have gifted to me.
I made chips by hand for dinner that night to share the wonder that is Watties Tomato Sauce with my husband and 2 little ones. Over the next week, my husband, who thinks that regular ketchup should be a foodgroup of its own, finished all but a few scraps of that little bottle of Watties. When I confronted him he told me that he didn't see much of a difference between the Watties and ketchup but that the bottle of Watties was easier to reach in the fridge than the ketchup. @#*&%^$%&*!!!!!!
I haven't had Watties since then. Not by choice, but due to financial restrictions. Bills must be paid before I can order a case of my beloved Watties. :)
