New Zealand is well renowned for its sheep. In fact there are about 10 sheep for every person in New Zealand. These sheep are usually kept on, what are called, sheep stations. Sheep stations are essentially large sheep farms.

Large sheep stations can be found in the Canterbury high country on the east coast of New Zealand. The landscape of these stations varies from rugged snow capped mountains to meandering shingle based rivers. It was found that only Merino sheep were hardy enough to endure these landscapes.

Every year the sheep were rounded up, by horse backed riders, and driven from the mountains to the greener valleys. Once the sheep had been rounded up to the valleys they were shorn by the sheep shearers. Sheep shearing involves lying each individual sheep on it’s back and then clipping the wool, this is not carried out with a motorised shears but back in the old times a hand shears was used.

Shearers would shear thousands for sheep and they are generally considered to be some of the hardest and toughest men in New Zealand. However although they are hardy men they tended to have some of the softest hands on the farms.

Over the years the lore of the hardest men on the farm having the softest hands was passed down from generation to generation until science proved that the oil which can be found in the Merino wool is one of the closest oils to the oils humans secrete from their skin.
