about the New Zealand possum and we would like to share those facts with you.
- Brushtail possums were introduced into New Zealand about 150 years ago from Australia.
- They have no natural predators and hence have multiplied to over 60 Million in New Zealand.
- They destroy approximately 30 thousand tonnes of native trees and vegetation every night.
- Native Flora and fauna (including the Kiwi) is threatened to extinction due to the brushtail possum.
- The brushtail possum is only a very distant relative of the American Opossum.
- To preserve New Zealand's native forests it is necessary to control the possum population.
- Most controls used in the past have had very minimal impact on the population.
