What are Poi?
Poi is the word Maori use for a ball on a cord. They were used by the New Zealand Maori as training to improve coordination and at the same time boost their strength and flexibility in their arms and hands.
Female Maori dancers performed a dance known as the maori poi, the rhythmic dance is performed by swinging balls attached to cords.
Although the dance is now merely a tradition, it had a practical use, it kept the women's hands supple and flexible for weaving. Poi have also been used as a form of training for other traditional Maori weapons such as the Mere or Patu.
