About The Bell Bird
The Bellbird is a significant participant in the dawn chorus played out in the remaining New Zealand bush every morning. It has a bell like song (sometimes confused with the Tui) which Captain Cook described as sounding "like small bells exquisitely tuned.". As a member of the honey eater family, it has a curved bill and a long tongue with brush like tip, which is used to reach deep into flowers and drink nectar. Is also feeds on fruit and insects.
The Bellbird is still widespread on the New Zealand mainland, however mammalian predators keep their numbers low.
