Douglas Creek Greenstone Stylised Hei Matau Fish Hook Pendant
A truly beautiful pendant of New Zealand Douglas Creek Pounamu / greenstone. The pendant is in the style of the stylised Maori fish hook or hei matau. The pendant comes with an adjustable black cord, meaning card and is carved by master carver Nathan Jerry.
Size: The pendant measures 55mm (2.17 inch) long, 30mm (1.18 inches) wide and 5mm (1/4 inch) deep.
This fish hook was hand carved in the invercargill region in the south of the south island of New Zealand by Nathan Jerry. Nathan is trained in traditional maori carving in wood, bone and stone. His has been carving traditional maori designs for more than 20 years. He is of Tainui decent and His Hapu is Ngati Kiriwai. He has the deepest respect for our nations most prized possession - pounamu. He currently lives in Invercargill and works from his own studio.
Douglas Creek Pounamu / Greenstone is found on the west coast of the south island and is becoming very rare these days and hence collectible.
The pendant has been hand carved with a matte finish giving the pendant a beautiful natural and smooth feel.

Fish Hook / Hei Matau
The Fish Hook is known to the Maori as the Hei Matau. It was worn by Maori fishermen on fishing trips as talismans to protect them. Originally the hei matau was a tool, an actual fishing hook, used to fish. It was kept safe by wearing the tool around the neck, the fish hooks were traditionally made from greenstone or bone. In a spiritual sense the fish hook or hei matau represents strength, determination, peace, prosperity and good health.
The pendant comes in a velvet pouch with a fish hook meaning card.
