Nikau Collection Kauri Coaster Set of 4
A four coaster set made from ancient Kauri, recovered from peat swamps, it is recognised as the oldest workable timber in the world. Each of the coasters feature designs based on the gift of Tane Mahuta, God of the forest - depicting the elegant overlapping of the nikau palm fronds. The small black spiral denotes the unfolding of the new frond, the red border encloses the overlapping growth pattern of the palm.
Each of the coasters measures 115mm across (4.5 inches) and come packaged in an attractive gift box with a meaning card.
The Nikau
The nikau is the World's most southern native palm. The Maori valued this gift and utilised it in many ways to weave garments, panels and floorcoverings. for thatching, basketweaving and added young leaves, flower clusters and stems to their diet.
Kauri
The Kauri tree, Agathis Australis, is New Zealand's largest and most famous native tree. It is a type of confir or pine tree which grows in the subtropical upper North Island. In times past large Kauri forests proliferated this region.
