Red Crowned Parakeet Kakariki Soft Toy with Real SoundFormerly widespread, this green parakeet with red only head markings is now very rare on the New Zealand Mainland and only common on offshore islands, where it can number in thousands. There are 6 sub species spread throughout islands from New Caledonia to the Chathams, including sub-Antarctic islands. They prefer relatively open spaces in and around forested areas and frequently feed on the ground. They breed in tree holes, but also low down in places like burrows in thick vegetation and crevices on cliffs. Their chicks stay on the ground for a few days after fledging which makes them very vulnerable to introduced pests like the rat, stoat and possum. They feed on berries, seeds, fruit and insects.
The Kakariki measures 18cm tall and features a real recording of the Kakariki when pressed.
