This freestanding Hei-Matau (Fish Hook) designed whakariro features inlaid paua. The piece is made from native new zealand rimu.
100% New Zealand made.
Measurements:
Base - 145mm (5 1/2 inches) wide, 70mm (2 1/2 inches) deep (approx) and 15mm (1/2 inch) high (approx).
Fish Hook - 125mm (4 3/4 inches) wide and 170mm (6 1/2 inches) high (approx).
The Hei-Matau (Fish Hook)
The Hei-Matau which is pronounced hay-may-tow, means hook. It is said that the hook symbol gives strength and determination to the wearer. It protects those who wear it while at sea.
